So what we have is an NES launch title with explicit and implicit connections to the Donkey Kong games (both Arcade and handheld) that came before it. So, that's two enemies (of six total) from previous Donkey Kong games! And before someone says it's a bit of a stretch that the G&W thing showed up in an arcade title later, I would just like to point out that Greenhouse predates Donkey Kong 3. All later bee-with-spear enemies in the greater Mario franchise would have unique names, making these two arguably the same creature. While I realize it's a little nebulous to say these are the same, looking at them, they are both bees with spears in the same pose. Ice Climber arcade version is the simply named "Bee", that is a sprited version of the (also simply named) "Bee" enemy from the Donkey Kong 3 Game & Watch title. Among the cast of baddies (that don't actually go out of their way to attack the Climbers, now that I think on it), are Nitpickers! From Donkey Kong Jr! (and later DK and Mario vs DK titles!) That's an explicit connection right there! Among the expanded enemy cast in the VS. Makes sense, the games are about jumping after all! Additionally, the stages are now multiscreen affairs, scrolling up as you progress. Nana and Popo are permanently equipped with the hammers made famous by Mario, but are much more versatile with them, being able to use them to break the stage in addition to defeating enemies, and being able to jump with them as well. Little guy with hammer proceeds upwards via jumping through a stage and confronts a giant enemy at the end. The game is basically an evolution of the formula established in Donkey Kong for the Arcade. Maybe it's because I never really looked past obvious DK and early Mario games while researching stuff for the Arcade DK site I want to someday make. So I'm not sure why I never twigged on to this before, given how much I catalog all the Arcade and NES DK stuff.
